Cooperstown was named after founder William Cooper, father of author James Fenimore Cooper.
Cooperstown is known across the country as the home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. The community also boasts the Farmers’ Museum, the Fenimore Art Museum and Glimmerglass Opera. With assets of more than $500 million, the Clark Foundation dominates local philanthropy. The foundation traces its fortune to Edward Clark, a partner in the Singer sewing machine company.
